BY MIGHTY HEARTS ON MAY 10, 2018

Over the first quarter Mighty Hearts was able to gift services to families in need, including one who has experienced added difficulties, as do many of our heart families.

Numerous families experience marital stress after their child undergoes heart surgery. Even the most rock solid marriages experience some kind of strife including; PTSD, depression, divorce, financial burdens, other symptoms of long hospital stays, and fear of an unknown future for their child. One family in particular experienced all of these.

When Sandra (names changed to preserve privacy) reached out to Mighty Hearts, her daughter Naomi had already spent over a year in the hospital. During that year, both parents were doing their best to be present for their daughter and also be at home for their other child. Money began to run low and the financial burden on the family was beginning to crush them. Both spouses began arguing more than before and depression set in for Sandra. Her greatest challenge was trying to keep everything together—the house, the family, the health of her daughter, her job, and herself. She became the sole breadwinner for the family and although she worked harder than she had in her life, it wasn’t enough to meet the demands of their pressing hospital life. Coupled with deep depression she was in need of help.

Mighty Hearts has been able to provide food, counseling support, transportation services, and cleaning services as needed—–Help that otherwise would not have been there for Sandra and her family.

Our mission at Mighty Hearts is to ensure CHD and hospital families thrive. We provide support to not only help them get through day by day, but to reach a point where they are thriving, and back to being themselves again. When we come across a family that has extended needs, we do all we can to eliminate some of the burdens and move them one step closer to thriving on their own.

We look forward to assisting more families like Sandra’s in the coming months.

1 in 110 children lives with congenital heart disease. There is no cure. Mighty Hearts helps CHD affected families thrive by
bridging the gaps between their child’s medical care, hospital stays and living with CHD long term.
